CHARACTER STRENGTHS COURSES

+630 Course Completions

Each video series is professionally produced and custom-created with the incarcerated learner in mind, using our innovative formula of positive psychology tools and creative arts. Staff and/or former participants with carceral experience are central to the development of the curriculum and, when possible, are included in the videos. This makes the content especially relevant and motivating for individuals to continue in their learning journeys. Certificates - a valuable commodity in prison - are also available for learners who write to us with their reflections and demonstration of completion for the following courses.

"Shining Light’s Character Strengths Video Series is probably the greatest (most well-done) character strengths 'creation' for the correctional facility setting/population that I have seen."

-Dr. Ryan Niemiec / Education Director and Psychologist, VIA Institute on Character /
Fellow and Council of Advisors, International Positive Psychology Association

In this four-part video series, Nina, a professional teaching theatre artist, introduces learners to Character Strengths, a list of 24 positive traits we all have. Each video also features group discussions from a panel of professionals, some formerly incarcerated.

By providing tools for participants to understand themselves and others better through this lens, our goal is to improve participants’ perspectives of themselves and equip them with strategies to build up those around them in order to strengthen their own communities, both inside and outside prison.

In this four-part video series, Nina expand’s on the “Learn Your Strengths” course by giving people the opportunity to take an in-depth look at the character strengths of gratitude and self-regulation. Viewers also benefit from insights and discussion from a panel of thriving reentrants with over 50 years of lived experience on the inside, and learn strategies to grow skills in boosting positivity in others and setting achievable goals.
