SPREADING HOPE

Residents & Staff Collaborate to Create Supportive Environments

"Watching the atmosphere at PCI change, one inmate at a time, has been so rewarding... It has changed my life as it has so many inmates' lives. The Loop gives hope, not just to the incarcerated people but to the staff and families."

- Stacey Leisure, Asst. to the Deputy Warden

Shining Light's interactive magazine "The Loop" uniquely offers strengths-based tools from leading research to improve mental health and build prosocial community, while promoting literacy, communication skills and creative expression.

In 2023, an adaptable peer-to-peer program called Loop Groups was developed to better leverage the benefits of the magazine. Facility partners work with Shining Light staff and selected incarcerated leaders to implement an evidence-based curriculum in ways that work best for them. Loop Groups meet weekly for discussion, accountability and creative expression guided primarily by the pages of "The Loop" magazine.

For facilities like Pickaway Correctional Institution (PCI) in Ohio, this resident/staff collaboration has led to a significant increase in engagement. When "The Loop" magazine first arrived in 2021, PCI had just 4 casual readers - 0.2% of their population. By May 2024, through unwavering support from Deputy Warden Mike Fisher and the Loop Group staff supervisor Stacey Leisure, the facility had 19.5% of their population - over 350 people - interacting with the magazine.

When the Loop Group launched at PCI, about 50 readers quickly engaged, with 7 residents selected to co-facilitate 3 different groups - two for the general population and one for residents in the Frazier Medical Center. Not only does this model enable the peer facilitators to have more agency over their own transformation journeys, but also the encouragement, support and mentorship they provide allows others to feel more understood and accepted, and more inspired to take next steps towards realizing their own potential.

  • "Our Loop Group is very engaging. It brings fellowship and shines a light on those it touches. We do informal group therapy, peer support and character strength building. In doing so we create a positive "shining" environment, helping to grow PCI's Shining Light community, one light at a time."

    - Edward, Peer Facilitator

  • "We dare each other to be encouraged. Having hope and being positive in prison is complicated, especially as a lifer. This (group) helps to know you're not alone in choosing to be encouraged."

    - Brandon, Peer Facilitator

  • "We're a team. We got each other's back, help keep each other's light shining... We say we’re not here to deal with behavior (what’s wrong with you) - we’re here to deal with strengths (what’s right). That is much more productive"

    - Eddie, Peer Facilitator

  • "When I began my journey here at PCI, I realized that the incarcerated individuals did not have enough to do to occupy their time. I put a suggestion box outside my office door asking if there was anything they would like to do as far as meaningful activities. I got a suggestion to start the Loop Group back up here at PCI. No idea what The Loop was, I found out how I could help get this started back up. Since that day I have been obsessed with The Loop and everything that embodies those 24 character strengths. I have the best facilitators that I could have ever asked for. It has changed my life as it has so many inmates' lives. Watching the atmosphere at PCI change one inmate at a time, has been so rewarding. If we help just one person with the messages that the Loop sends out, it will all be worth it. I know it is all worth it, because I see these men changing right in front of my eyes. I am so lucky to have been placed where I am and with the people that surround me. The Loop gives hope, not just to the incarcerated people but to the staff and families. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of something so positive and impactful."
